Sharon Oiga co-chairs STA NEXT
The annual Inspiration Weekend of the Society of Typographic Arts is designed for a small group of people to meet and share work on a type-related topic. This year’s theme asks: What's next for you in design and typography?
On behalf of the STA, Professor Oiga and her co-chair Guy Villa, welcomed STA members and invited guests to the Eaglewood Resort in Itasca. The Weekend keynote speaker was Neil Summerour, a Georgia-based type designer and lettering artist. He’s the founder of Positype type foundry, and Swash & Kern lettering studio. Summerour draws letters, creates typefaces, workshops, talks every once in awhile, and then repeats the process over again. He’s won the Type Directors Club Certificate of Typographic Excellence 6 times and was a 2012 recipient of the People’s Choice Award in the Morisawa Type Design competition for his Japanese typeface, Tegaki. He currently serves as Chair for the Society of Typographic Aficionados.
UIC Design sophomore students Nour Zaki, Graeme Boland, and Adrian Politzer were invited to present, Building the Muscles of Insight, a project developed in class with Professor Cheryl Towler Weese.
