Design AIGA Fellows and AIGA Medalist

UIC Design now has 4 AIGA Fellows on faculty: Cheryl Towler Weese, Graphic Design (bestowed 2013), Marcia Lausen, Graphic Design and Director, UIC School of Design (bestowed 2011), Philip Burton, Graphic Design (bestowed 2003), and John Massey* (Professor Emeritus), Graphic Design (bestowed 2001). Founded in 1914 as the American Institute of Graphic Arts, AIGA remains the oldest and largest professional membership organization for design and is now known simply as “AIGA, the professional association for design.” The Fellow award program is a means of recognizing designers who have made a significant contribution to raising the standards of excellence in practice and conduct within their local or regional design community as well as in their local AIGA chapter. The areas of education, writing, leadership and reputation, as well as the practice of design are given equal consideration in measuring significant contribution.

*In addition, Professor Emeritus John Massey has been awarded the AIGA medal. The medal of AIGA—the most distinguished in the field—is awarded to individuals in recognition of their exceptional achievements, services or other contributions to the field of design and visual communication.
